Ghiath Matar

Ghiath Matar was a 25-year-old peaceful activist and icon of the Syrian revolution, who inspired a generation of activists in the style of non-violent resistance and was nicknamed “Little Gandhi”.

In his last will, he said “Remember me when you celebrate the fall of the regime. And remember that I gave my soul and blood for that moment… May god guide you on the road of peaceful struggle and grant you victory”.

Born on 8 October 1986, Ghiath was a tailor, and hailed from Daraya, a constant spring of social change initiatives in Damascus’s suburbs. Along with his fellow Darayans, he initiated one of the first Local Coordination Committees (LCC), from which a network of similar branches throughout the country was to rise.

The LCCs were the pivotal force behind the revolution, supporting civil disobedience in the hope for a better Syria, whilst maintaining a bulwark against the regime’s efforts to inflame sectarianism. They recorded and organized peaceful protests and documented information on the injured and dead, raising the voice ever louder of Syrians who had recently found theirs.

Ghiath, nicknamed ‘little Ghandi’, famously met violence committed against his local townsfolk by regime forces with red roses and bottles of water. He steadfastly maintained his commitment to peaceful struggle in the face of both brutal and extreme violence.

Ghiath was arrested on September 6th, 2011. His mutilated corpse was returned to his pregnant wife days later. He died before meeting his son, named Ghiath in his honour.

He was one of approximately a thousand Syrians from Daraya who died under torture (as per regime records from August 2018). His death sparked wide anger and prompted many Syrians to take up arms to counter the regime’s indiscriminate massacres. Ghiath’s story and struggles have been depicted in the documentary film named after him, ‘Little Gandhi’, directed by Sam Kadi.

The will of the martyr Ghiath Matar

“Praise be to God, Lord of the world, and the best of prayers and greetings to our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions

My brothers and sisters, the free youth ofthe revolution, you who walked with me onthe path of freedom during the most beautiful days of my life

If news of my martyrdom pains you, know that I was granted happiness and freedom, and that I hope to return to life, to raise again the banner of truth, justice, dignity and freedom and to be martyred again … Do not think that they have beaten me with this bullet that they fired

No, by my Lord! I was victorious and fulfilled my cause every moment I went out to the streetsto sayno to injustice and tyrannyandyes to freedom, justice and dignity.

My will to you is to stand on the same principle that we went out to the streets for, and to work to achieve all the slogans that we raised to become a tangible reality. To stand up and proclaim your courage, no matter how they try to harm you or shake your ranks. Do not allow them to change you. Do not cheapen my blood and the blood of martyrs who gave their lives for the sake of a free Syria. Do not sell our sacrifices for any price, do not negotiate with your executioner, but extract from him your rights withyour steadfastness and your insistence on achieving victory.

I saw freedom at the door, I saw it so close,  to you and to me

Every time we went out

When our chants shook the earth and caused terror in the hearts of cowards, I saw freedom approaching, and victory being achieved … I now see it from my worldcoming closer to you,so be patient, for victory is but an hour of patience.

Do not despair, even if the whole world fights you and denies you. Do not stop, even if they block you or erect barriers and obstacles in your ranks. Do not retreat, or they will beat you, destroy you and kill the dream with you. Do not give in and sell our precious blood, and every effort we made in the way of a free and dignified homeland.

Remember me whenever the cheeringrises, whenever women ululate at the wedding ceremonies of martyrs, whenever a new demand of ours is fulfilled in the way of freedom. Remember me when you celebrate the fall of the regime and the liberation of the homeland from those who abuse it. Remember me every time you plant a Jasmine sapling in Syrian soil, every time you lay a brick in a building, and everytime you see the future in the eyes of children. And remember that I gave my soul and blood for that moment.

May God maintain you on the road of peaceful struggle, and grant victory with your hands, oh heroes.
